JOB DESCRIPTION AND QUALIFICATIONS

TITLE: PROJECT ENGINEER

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Project Engineer supports the engineering department in the design, planning, and analysis of URECC’s electric distribution and transmission systems. This position is designed for early career individuals with a strong educational background in engineering. The engineer will gain practical experience through on-the-job training, mentoring, and direct involvement in projects that improve the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the URECC’s electric system.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

System Design & Analysis

  • Assist in the design and engineering of distribution and transmission system improvements, including new distribution lines, service extensions, and system upgrades.
  • Perform engineering studies including load flow, short circuit, voltage drop, system modeling, and protective device coordination.
  • Support system optimization efforts to enhance reliability, efficiency, and capacity.

Protection & Power Quality

  • Learn and assist with the evaluation, implementation, and maintenance of protective relaying schemes.
  • Participate in fault analysis and protective device coordination studies.
  • Support power quality monitoring, troubleshooting, and improvement initiatives.

Project Management

  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and coordinating engineering projects.
  • Participate in budgeting, resource allocation, and contractor/vendor coordination.
  • Provide support for construction, inspection, and commissioning activities.

Technical Documentation & Software

  • Prepare and maintain engineering drawings, maps, and system documentation.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and engineering design/analysis software for modeling and system evaluation.
  • Assist with preparation of reports, specifications, and technical correspondence.

Collaboration & Professional Development

  • Work collaboratively with internal employees, departments, members, and contractors/vendors.
  • Stay informed on industry standards, codes, and emerging engineering technologies.
  • Participate in training, continuing education, and professional development opportunities.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all URECC safety policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required for office, field, or construction site activities.
  • Identify and report potential safety hazards in the workplace or field.
  • Support a strong safety culture by promoting safe work practices and compliance with applicable safety standards and regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, etc.) REQUIRED.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is preferred at time of hire. If not already obtained, must achieve FE certification within 24 months of hire.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is encouraged as the employee advances in their engineering career.
  • Must be able to drive automotive equipment and have a current Texas Driver’s License Class C. Must demonstrate understanding and thorough knowledge of all traffic laws and rules governing safe driving practices.

Experience:

  • Professional experience is preferred but not required. Additional training provided.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Basic understanding of engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD or equivalent drafting software.
  • Familiarity with engineering design and analysis software (e.g., load flow, short circuit analysis) preferred.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work is performed in both office settings and field environments including but not limited to, substations, line routes, and construction sites.
  • Must be able to use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, and printers.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required.
  • Position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, and drive for extended periods.
  • Limited travel may be required for training, meetings, or project support.
